Mackay Sugar closer to providing renewable energy to Mackay region

According to North Queensland Register

Mackay Sugar’s $120 million Cogeneration Project is fast taking shape, with preliminary site works already completed and civil works set to commence at Racecourse Mill next week.

Mackay Sugar CEO Quinton Hildebrand said the plant would produce enough clean renewable energy to provide one-third of the Mackay region’s electricity requirements and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 200,000 tonnes (t) equivalent carbon dioxide (CO2e) each year.

Had desperation to find alternative energy source pushed people into converting sugar into energy? Let’s examine the pros & cons of using sugar as alternative energy to fossil fuel.

Pros (as stated in the article)

  1. Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 200,000 tonnes (t) equivalent carbon dioxide (CO2e) each year.
  2. Provide one-third of the Mackay region’s electricity requirements
  3. The plant will also generate significantly more income from the same sugarcane crop, delivering exceptional value to shareholders
  4. provide more than 250 jobs during construction, with construction contracts being awarded to local Mackay companies.
  5. take advantage of the untapped potential from Mackay Sugar’s cane supply

Cons

  1. Sudden surge in sugar prices for human consumption in the region
  2. Hyper-inflation in food prices that uses sugar
  3. High fluctuation of energy supply during a “bad” harvesting season due to natural disasters.
  4. Technically not 100% fossil fuel free as pesticides are oil based, fertilizers are natural gas, harvesters uses oil too.

Overall, sugar will eventually be just like oil and we will no longer have a normal fizzy drinks with sugar anymore or prepare to pay more for it…and there goes my sugar donut or my 3 in 1 coffee.

Sugar like oil can push inflation too causing more hardship in the global economy too, all that sounds like a bad idea but alternative energy need a balance of every possible energy sources. Hopefully, we can research more into a more abundant source of renewable energy.

Media should promote renewable energy: IREDA

According to Yahoo!News

New Delhi, June 1 (PTI) A government organisation dedicated to development of renewable energy today appealed the media to play a more meaningful role in promoting alternative source of energy.

“Today, our power sector is struggling and there is an urgent need to find an alternative source of energy. Renewable Energy can bridge this gap but it is unfortunate that it finds a very negligible coverage in the media. We need your (media) support,” IREDA chairman and managing director Debashish Majumdar said at ”Media Roundtable On Renewable Energy” conference here.

The only way I can think of to help the media understanding on renewable energy cost are to cut them off from electricity produced by fossil fuel for a day, that way they will finally understand the importance of renewable energy and the consequences of not focusing on it.

Fossil fuel is not forever available even thou there are many who promises that by saying there are many “alternative” to oil like Oil shale which are abundant in some countries however it’s more costly to extract oil from it than oil & natural gas because it’s from sediments (ROCKS).

Once oil sprayed out in high pressure from new oil wells like a geyser without any assistance or “cost” but once it’s being extracted, the pressure lowered & the oil industry need to pump huge amount of fresh water into the oil wells to “make the oil float” out of the oil wells.

Then the oil to water ratio decreases over time  until we have to abandon the wells that in the 1950′s are claimed to be “FOREVER LASTING”.

After that the heavy oil in soil call bitumen or Tar Sands are quoted to be the NEXT big thing in Canada because the cost of oil is so high and digging into tar sands seems to be cost effective.

Now, we are talking about oil shale…basically rocks instead of tar sands.

Nuclear had been proven again & again to be just a “time bomb” waiting to explode and many countries are unable to build it due to this reason.

So, the media industry need to understand that in the future…fossil fuel will no longer be the dominant energy that they can consume freely & cheaply.

Renewable energy is the only way out and people will need to know all this quickly or there will be a day when human will fight each other to the death just for the last barrel of fossil fuel.

Oil Above $100/barrel “again”

According to Bloomberg:

Oil surged to $100 a barrel in New York for the first time in two years as Libya’s violent uprising threatened to disrupt exports from Africa’s third-biggest supplier and spread to other Middle East oil producers.

According to rte.ie

The price of Brent crude oil jumped more than $8 a barrel in London this morning as fears spread that unrest across North Africa and the Middle East could further disrupt oil supplies.

This morning the price of Brent hit a high of $119.79 a barrel, up $8.54 from yesterday’s close.

Here we have history unfolding right in front of our eyes, just like an fictional book about the coming depression of the world where oil prices goes sky high but my feelings is this will depress the world economy so much due to hyperinflation and cause a sudden drop in “demand” of oil itself.

This is because renewable energy or other alternative energy will suddenly become very viable due to the cost comparison with oil price and demand of oil will drop eventually, however this change won’t happen overnight as there are still millions or billions of vehicles that uses oil, petrol chemical products are everywhere including plastic, gasoline, paint and thousands of stuffs, food also uses plenty of oil before reaching our dinner table.

Ultimately, once the middle east unrest are settled down either with another war (oil grab) or otherwise, the price of oil may fluctuate wildly.

Saudi’s oil is not of the highest quality (usually high sulfur which is deadly) and hence cannot 100% cover the loss in Libya’s oil field.

Tonight’s market will go crazy with the news happening now and it will be very very risky to trade now as you won’t know the next movement will be.

Demand for biofuels expected to rise 20%-30% annually

According to ChannelNewsAsia:

SINGAPORE : This week, the European parliament voted for new rules that require lower emissions from commercial vehicles.

With governments globally continuing to set stiff targets for the use of “clean” energy, Biofuels Asia – a Singapore-based clean-energy company – is betting on Jatropha, a hardy plant that is a source of biodiesel.

Biofuels may be alternative fuel but by no means very “clean”, however it’s much “renewable” then fossil fuel.

What I mean it’s not clean because of the following.

  1. Fertilizers (Natural gas)
  2. Pesticides (Oil)
  3. Huge Mechanized Harvesters/seeders/plough (Oil)
  4. Water pumps for irrigation (electricity – probably by oil powered generator)

After all the fossil fuel being consumed to get the biofuels, the high cost may means if one day the oil price collapsed again after some kind of major economic crisis (maybe due to high oil prices -> hyper inflation -> banking & subprime or other kinds of crisis) MAY also means that the biofuel may be NET Loss in “cost” & “energy”.

EROEI – Energy Return over Energy Invested must be higher then fossil fuel to get a net gain, if the world blindly goes “green” just because of the carbon tax reduction it will not be a long term solution but a rather short term one.

Personally I still believe in true “renewable” energy from the Sun, Wind, Hydro, geothermal, wave, and other harvest-able natural energy from the environment.

However, due to unstable environmental circumstances in different countries may means some renewable energy cannot be “cost” effective to be utilized.

Nuclear is one way to go for some countries but it may pose risk of major disaster issues but it’s a medium term solution until a new & better way to harvest the natural energy “efficiently” & less cost intensive to maintain the system.

Biofuels is at best a temporary solution but it’s better then no solution so the best system may be a balance of all solutions to make up a way to counter the PEAK OIL crisis that may had already started.

Is Australia’s Flash Flood or is It Tsunami?

According to http://news.xinhuanet.com

BRISBANE, Australia, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) — Australia’s Queensland flood crisis has escalated as many towns in southern Queensland have been devastated by Monday’s unprecedented flash flooding.

The death toll from the flash flooding has risen to nine after another body was found, with about 66 people still missing, the state Premier Anna Bligh told reporters on Tuesday.

Bligh said many people remained unaccounted for in the Lockyer Valley towns of Murphy’s Creek, Grantham and Withcott, west of Brisbane and poor weather continued to hamper rescue efforts.

It’s really sad to see how bad the flash flood happened so suddenly, it looks almost like a tsunami to me.

I strongly believe that Australia will recover from this fast & quick as they are a hardy bunch of people who lived through disasters without panicking and most are very knowledgeable in survival situations.

It’s almost surprising to even hear this disaster only claim 10 lives as it looks like a severe tsunami that claim thousands, I hope people in Australia unite together & work for a ultimate goal of survival.

For people in the danger zone, be prepared with a “bug out” bag with all the necessary documents (passports, certificates, license, insurance paper, ID card and etc), at least a few days worth of clothes, bottled water, money, food, medical stuff, spare tooth brush, some soap bars or foam and family photographs if you got time.

For people already stranded, stay calm & don’t do any thing heroic to get yourself in any kind of danger.

Water & food is essential for stranded folks, drinking flood water is the LAST resort but you need to think of the consequences! Rain water is still clean enough but flood water can be mixed with sewage & may be dangerous to drink.

When you evacuate, remember to switch off any gas and electricity just in case.

Never play in the water as you will never know how much more water will come suddenly again and send you floating away with the rest of the dangerous debris like cars & metal bins.

Go for higher ground or buildings that have higher floors and be positive & mentally prepared for anything to happen.

US Dollar, when will it hyper-inflate? Are we all affected when it happens? Yes definitely!

Anything that’s still pegged to the US Dollar that became worthless when Petrol dollar system collapses will be suddenly too expensive to purchase at least for people who have their savings in US Dollars.

Let’s monitor some news about Petrol dollars & warn each others to “Spend” away all the US Dollar and collect something really valuable like skills, food, water, energy & shelter. The rest are still considered as “material” goods that are worth xxxx dollars in the future that we might not afford.

However, with US Economy down…it may means less demand for exports of goods by exporting countries like China which may implode their economy too. This will have a ripple effect throughout the world as the market balance everything out.

The rich may end up poorer with “alternative” investment in other “valuable” assets that deem valuable at that point of time like “properties”, “paper assets”, and other electronic numbers traded worldwide without knowing if the goods they traded in actually exist or knowing the actual demand.

The green technology may end up winner for the “user” but because of hyperinflation, those savings from using green technology may be negligible with rising energy cost.

The next oil price spike is coming soon when the petrol dollar system collapses.

But will we die from the dollar collapse? No, people had been without money in the ancient world for a long time…as they barter trade their goods & services with alternative “valuables” for many many years.

Just think positive & survive in anyway possible regardless of the value of your currency.

Ghost Towns & Malls in China

According to Wikipedia:

Dongguan, with a population in excess of 10 million, is located in southern China’s Guangdong province, east of the province’s largest city, Guangzhou. The mall was built on land formerly used for farming, in the Wanjiang District of the city. The project was spearheaded by Hu Guirong (Alex Hu), who became a billionaire in the instant noodle industry.

The mall contains sufficient space for as many as 2,350 stores in approximately 659,612 m2 of leasable space[2] and 892,000 m2 of total area.

The mall has seven zones modeled on international cities, nations and regions, including Amsterdam, Paris, Rome, Venice, Egypt, the Caribbean, and California. Features include an 25 m replica of the Arc de Triomphe, a replica of Venice’s St Mark’s bell tower, a 2.1 km canal with gondolas, and an 553-meter indoor-outdoor roller coaster.

Since its opening in 2005, the mall has suffered from a severe lack of occupants. Much of the retail space has remained empty, with over 99% of the stores vacant. The only occupied areas of the mall are near the entrance where several Western fast food chains are located and a parking structure repurposed as a kart racing track. A planned Shangri-La Hotel has not been constructed.

1. Ghost city: Kangbashi was meant to be the urban centre for wealthy coal-mining community Ordos and home to its one million workers, but its roads are eerily empty and the houses stand vacant

There are many towns in China quoted by the article above including Kangbashi, Bayannaoer, Zhengzhou New District, half of Erenhot, City of Dantu and Part of Xinyang.

Soaring property prices in China and high levels of investment has fuelled the construction of up several new cities. Experts fear a subsequent property crash could damage the global economy

More photographs by Time Magazines about Modern Ghost Town of China

This article represents a very disturbing trend that China currently facing, their citizens who buy properties but never really move into the new estate may present several problems in the near future.

These properties had became a sort of investment instead of using them as accommodation, this beat the conventional wisdom of normal demand & supply base on “actual demand”.

Actual demand of a property may represent the real value of the property that includes the surrounding amenities, availability of shops, offices and transportation.

However, if the citizen of China blindly purchase properties without proper research into the area & end up losing their investment or worst owning large sum of property loans from bank.

If there is another banking crisis similar to the sub prime crisis in America previously to happen in China….there will be millions of property owners to suddenly get burnt by their investment.

But looking in the positive note, if the China’s government manage to relocate their people in a city wide effort into the new town…it may not be so bad at all but if the citizens refuse to budge from their old city and continue to dream about reselling their properties to RICH people hence making a quick buck…may continue to hold on to their properties until the next bubble to burst.

If China’s property market burst, the economic crisis will SPREAD FAR across the globe probably making lot’s of investors very very poor.

North Korea Chicken out, while China Freeze with Coal Shortage

According to nz.news.yahoo.com

YEONPYEONG ISLAND, South Korea (AFP) – North Korea forswore retaliation against a South Korean live-fire drill and held out an olive branch over its nuclear drive, raising hopes for an easing to the region’s worst crisis in years.

The communist state said it “did not feel any need to retaliate against every despicable military provocation”, despite previously vowing a deadly riposte to the South’s drill on the border island of Yeonpyeong

According to news.yahoo.com

SHANGHAI – Communities in central and northern China are facing power cuts and rationing as winter coal supplies fall short of surging demand.

Cold weather and transport disruptions typically cause shortages most years, but the problem has been complicated by coal producers’ unhappiness over price controls that are crimping their profits.

The disruptions to supply appear to be worst in major coal producing regions such as Henan, where 40 percent of coal-fired power plants had fuel reserves equivalent to no more than three days of demand, according to a report on the State Grid’s website.

According to startribune.com

TOKYO – Asian stock markets rose Tuesday as tensions on the Korean peninsula eased a few notches.

Investors spent the previous day worried about possible North Korean retaliation against South Korean military drills on a frontline island that was shelled by the North last month.

Instead, Pyongyang backed off threats to strike back and reportedly offered concessions on its nuclear program.

All of the above are result of North Korea backing off any military retaliation in event of South Korea conducting of military exercises.

I think either China had finally pressured North Korea down or given North Korea sufficient aid to “calm down” while both country now suffer one of the harshest winters in the coming days.

Could this event is a simple begging for humanitarian aid by bad boy North Korea using the usual hostage situation to blackmail the region into negotiation & resume more “6 party talk” which may means exchanging of food for nuclear disarmament.

However, if China & South Korea cannot help North Korea in the future…due to unforeseen circumstances…will North Korea really carry out their threats?

Let’s pray they will not, politics & the strategy of conflict negotiation is a very complex chess game that not many countries can decipher North Korea’s next move.

South Korea just ended their military exercise, balls in North Korea’s court

According to theglobeandmail.com

South Korea fired live artillery Monday in a drill from a front-line island where similar exercises sparked a deadly North Korean bombardment last month, pressing forward in defiance of the North’s warnings to attack again.

However, a few hours earlier, according to CNN:

North Korea has agreed to a series of actions, including the return of U.N. inspectors, following discussions with Bill Richardson, former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, CNN’s Wolf Blitzer said Monday.

It seems that North Korea had already tried very hard not to go into war by agreeing to the return of the U.N. nuclear inspectors however its seems to be too late as the South Korea’s military exercise had already started.

Now that the military exercise had stopped, the ball is now in North Korea’s court to see if they play ball to their “threats”.

Option 1, North Korea don’t do any more provocation & get subdued into U.N. inspectors
Option 2, North Korea revoke previous agreement & banish any hope of U.N. inspectors to enter North Korea and began artillery retaliation with full Nuclear options on the table.

It’s obvious that option 2 don’t have much benefit to North Korea unless they shoot missiles that “drops” into the sea & claim to be their own “military exercise”.

However, any military movement now can easily sparks a full fledged war from the South Korea & USA too if any of North Korea’s military exercise suffer from any kind of “accidents”.

It seems now it’s almost inevitable to have a war & should focus on the consequences in event a war to start and that must take into account on how far & wide this war will spread.

The problem now is how North Korea will retaliate and where and how.

Conventional war is already outdated and that may means either NBC (Nuclear, Biological or Chemical) war or cyberwar but I do not know if cyberwar can do any damage to North Korea.

However, we cannot rule out the possibility of a standard conventional war first before using the NBC options which may have lot’s of collateral damage.

Another option is High Altitude Nuclear Blast to send multiple EMP (Electro-Magnetic Pulse) down to North Korea disabling most electronics & hopefully their nuclear capabilities without high collateral damages.

However, this may means bringing North Korea into the dark ages where electrical appliances will cease functioning to most of their country creating a humanitarian crisis.

North Korea’s military may use terrorist attack option to activate terrorist cell(s) in “enemy’s” countries & start NBC attack at there or even start to send smaller yield nuclear warhead towards South Korea via artillery or ICBM missiles.

China will have their hands full accepting refugees from both North Korea & South Korea and if North Korea happen to lose the war…or on the verge of losing …China may enter the war again as China may not want an USA allies to be at China’s border.

Let’s pray that the above scenario don’t happen as there will be loads of casualty of war.

FULL text of President Lee’s speech

Fellow Koreans,

Today, I am standing here keenly aware that I am responsible for not having been able to protect the lives and property of the people. I understand very well that you were greatly disappointed with how we responded to the shelling of Yeonpyeongdo (Yeonpyeong Island) by North Korea.

I feel enormous frustration and regret over the fact that innocent lives were lost and the homes and livelihood of the islanders were devastated.

I pray for the repose of the souls of Staff Sergeant Seo Jung-woo and Lance Corporal Moon Kwang-wook as well as the two civilian casualties-Mr. Kim Chi-baek and Mr. Bae Bok-chul. I also once again extend my heartfelt condolences to their families. I hope that those who were injured will recover quickly. I promise to urgently come up with the comprehensive measures to help the islanders of Yeonpyeongdo.

Fellow citizens,
North Korea’s provocation this time was entirely different and unprecedented in nature. Since the end of the Korean War, the North has perpetrated numerous provocations, but it has never launched a direct attack onto our territory before. Making matters worse, it indiscriminately shelled the island where some 1,400 residents are peacefully living.

A military attack against civilians is strictly prohibited even in time of war; it is a crime against humanity.

Only a few meters away from where shells landed, there is a school where classes were going on. I am outraged by the ruthlessness of the North Korean regime, which is even indifferent to the lives of little children.
Countries around the world are joining us in denouncing North Korea.

We have thus far tolerated provocations by the North time and again. On January 21, 1968, North Korean commandos infiltrated into Seoul with the intent of killing the President. A bomb explosion in Rangoon, Burma, set off by North Korean agents, killed many high-ranking South Korean Government officials who were accompanying the President. The North has already tried and failed twice to kill the South Korean head of state. North Korean agents blew up a civilian airplane in 1987, taking the lives of 115 passengers.

South Korea nonetheless endured these continual provocations because we entertained a slight hope that the North would change course someday and an unwavering commitment to peace on the Korean Peninsula. Over the past 20 years, therefore, South Korea has striven to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue through dialogue and collaboration while at the same time providing unstinted humanitarian assistance.

North Korea, on the other hand, responded with a series of provocative acts, including the development of a nuclear program, the sinking of the Navy corvette Cheonan by an explosion and the shelling of Yeonpyeongdo.

At long last, we came to a realization that it no longer makes sense for us to anticipate that the North would abandon its nuclear program or its policy of brinkmanship on its own. The South Korean people now unequivocally understand that prolonged endurance and tolerance will spawn nothing but more serious provocations.

Those who have so far supported the North Korean regime might now see its true colors.

We are aware of the historic lesson that a disgraceful peace achieved through intimidation only brings about greater harm in the end. Only courage that defies retreat under any threat or provocation will bring about genuine peace. If the North commits any additional provocations against the South, we will make sure that it pays a dear price without fail.

I have confidence in the courage and potential of the citizens of Korea. We are a great people who, as of this year, have built the world’s seventh largest export powerhouse in the face of the North’s incessant menace and belligerence. In the current national crisis situation, the Korean people have demonstrated patriotism and composure.

Many young men and women went to the wake of the young soldiers who were killed in action. Citizens have volunteered to collect donations and have gone about their business with fortitude. The Republic of Korea is going to be safe and sound because of you.

There was a split in public opinion over the torpedoing of the Cheonan. Unlike that time, our people have united as one this time. Amid such unity and determination, any surreptitious attempt to create divisiveness in the nation will have no chance of success. Along with all the citizens of the Republic, I will never retreat.

The international community, too, is supporting us. Leaders of the United States, Japan, Germany and the United Kingdom as well as Russia and many other countries condemned the act of brutality by the North and are standing in full support of our position. Especially, as our ally, the United States has demonstrated a strong resolve to respond by taking action.

Fellow Koreans,
The courageous members of our Armed Forces have fought well. Some soldiers dashed to fulfill their duties without even noticing that the camouflage on their helmets had caught fire in the barrage of live shells. Those who were on leave of absence promptly returned to their units.

Citizens of Korea,
From now on, the Government will do whatever is required of it without fail.

The Government will establish Armed Forces that live up to their name. We will defend the five West Sea Islands near the northern sea border with a watertight stance against any kind of provocation. We will proactively carry out the defense reform as planned in order to make our Armed Forces even stronger.

Fellow Koreans,

Now is the time we have to demonstrate our determination with actions rather than many words.

I plead with you to have confidence in the Government and the Armed Forces and rally around our cause.

Unity is the best national security measure.

Thank you very much.

The above words is definitely more harsh then the speech on May 24 2010 when North Korea sinks The Cheonan.

The previous speech stills asked North Korea for apology and will investigate the incident but the latest speech had set the tone of final warning towards North Korea.

This means South Korea might no longer sit still anymore in any event of another unprovoked attack from North Korea.

This may means a high chance of a declaration of war in the coming days or weeks if North Korea is crazy enough to attack again.

China, on the other hand request all the countries involved in the nuclear talks with North Korea to hold an emergency talk.

It was unclear whether China was calling for a resumption of the talks on North Korea’s nuclear program or inviting the countries involved in those talks — China, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Russia, and the United States — to discuss North Korea’s recent actions.

However, it seems clear that if war breaks out it’s going to involve many countries to clean up the mess especially North Korea had revealed to public that they have nuclear enrichment facilities.

Personally, I felt that North Korea maybe in a situation that they want attention from the world yet unable to get their attention…and this time round it’s definitely got everyone’s attention!

it will be interesting what the North Korean representative says during the emergency meeting and the final conclusion of the talks.

I think it’s time to unite both Korea in a way similar to the fall of the Berlin wall, there must be a way to influence the people of North Korea so much that they can eventually change their government to push towards unification.

This may be against the wishes of other North Korea’s allies but it’s for the peace & prosperity of Korea as an whole and also th e rest of the world as well.

However, if a major war breaks out…the world might get affected once again. Let’s pray that if it happens, it will not involve China and other major countries as it will be another world war.

If North Korea fights Other countries, let North Korea defend themselves…China please stay out of the fight if possible otherwise many countries may be involved causing a much bigger conflict.

Let’s us pray it will not come to this.
