The KP Index has climbed to a 5 magnitude. The index is now a solar storm as the Earth is inside a stream of charged particles from a coronal hole on the sun.

The storm is expected to last for 24 hours and then subside. During this time Earthquakes will be on the rise as the solar storms usually come with larger magnitude worldwide Earthquakes.

Report your sightings of the Northern or Southern Lights below. What do you think? Will Earthquakes be on the increase now that this storm has hit?

Let’s monitor the situation via the Solar Monitor and see if there’s any increased in Earthquakes activities!

Communicating after EMP attack, Solar Flare/Storm, Magnetic Pole Shift

YouTube Preview Image
There are a serious news about the coming Solar Storm that may cause world wide black out, check out the news articles.

  1. Nasa solar flare space storm warning: a British scientist writes
  2. Nasa’s 2013 solar flare warning: how much do we need to worry?

I like to discuss about the preparation methods to communicate after a major solar flare event, the preparation method must be simple to follow & easily understood by the masses.

I found a great forum at God Like Production and they discuss at length ways to communicate after all the electronics get overloaded by induced electricity shock from the Solar Storm.

Various methods from the simplest to the complicated are discussed and I have a few of myself too so Let’s list them all below.

  1. Pencil & Pen method – Since before the arrival of internet we had been sending snail mails everywhere in the globe but this time round there will be no mail vans but horseback mail instead. Leave a written note at home before going out may serve as a communication as well.
  2. CB Radio or UHF Radio – These radio can be preemptively protected using a simple Faraday cage so that they can be used AFTER the solar storm passed.
  3. Internet –  Many may also argue that you won’t get internet once the Internet service provider goes down after the solar storm, I will debate that the service provider can and possibly will restore their services very quickly if they know what to protect against the solar storm now. Keep your favorite internet laptops, tablets, smart phones protected with a faraday cages in case you can use it to send email or video calls to seek help.
  4. Renewable Energy - do not wait for the government to provide electricity to the individual, get a renewable energy source for your self as soon as possible. It may be solar panels, wind mill, bicycle generator, hand crank or even DIY methods of energy production from reflected sun lights to a steam engine power generator. Anything is possible if you have the will power & time to invest.

I may not be 100% prepared myself as there are so many things to prepare! Let’s list down the items that require some kind of preparation.

  • Food –  in times where everywhere are closed due to lacking of electronically powered gadgets like vehicles, computers & refrigerators we must prepare food storage in event there are no electronics around to help us.
  • Water – water pump from city water supply may get disabled during the solar storm as most of them are computer controlled, get a big water tank or fish tank that can give you some water to filter to drink during crisis. Filtration is important & remember to boil before drinking.
  • Protect gadgets of priority – protect your electronics with faradays cages if possible so that no EMP can get through, that may means spare electronics to be kept in faraday cages. For me it may be a spare landline telephone, iPad, CB radio (not yet buy), portable hard disk, video camera and more. Check this link for instructions!

How Vulnerable Is the Power Grid?

According to Time.com:

The attack could come when we’re most vulnerable — a blistering hot July afternoon or a freezing cold January night. Suddenly, vast sections of the U.S. power grid go black. The lights go out, air-conditioning (or heating) shuts down.

Once it becomes clear that this is no temporary brownout, the public begins to panic. At the power utilities, engineers can’t understand why the network shut off, and can’t get it to start up again.

It’s hours before the truth emerges: a terrorist group (or a hostile country, or some evil-genius hacker) has broken into the computer networks that control the power grid, bringing the U.S. to its knees.

Read the full article at Time.com:

Power Grid

Power Grid

- The article describe of hackers taken control of the utility power grid had actually portrayed in the blockbuster movie “Die Hard 4.0″ is generally “NOT GOING TO HAPPEN” which points towards fiction.

However, on the contrary I believe it may happen in our life time not by some cyber hacker but a more simple sohphicated method using the EMP (electromagnetic pulse) or NNEMP (Non-nuclear electromagnetic pulse) near power plants.

EMP caused by a nuclear device exploding above any power plant will not destroy all infrastructure but instead creating a huge electromagnetic wave that can virtually “overload” all circuits that are not protected by Faraday’s cage.

The idea is some hackers may be able to get their hands on certain NNEMP device and try it near any power plant with remote control activation via internet far away from ground zero.

The blackout may be temporary for this type of attack as any electronics can be replaced and repaired easily and the most the down time can be just weeks.

The worst case scenario is the source of fuel that power the generators of the power plant…if it’s the same of fossil fuel such as natural gas or crude oil…we are in a big trouble in the near future.

The choke point still points to the narrow straits of Hormuz where 40% of the world oil supply passes through this strait, conveniently IRAN happens to be in artillery range of these super oil tankers and very very vulnerable to their air to naval missiles.

The recent article about Israel thinking of striking Iran may be the “beginning” of global energy crisis and permanent black out in majority of the world that uses crude oil or natural gas as feed stock for their electricity power generation or face extreme inflation of OIL PRICES that may sky rocket to above $200 per barrel.

However, Israel President dismissed the talk about striking IRAN and downplay the tension like a musician artist stroking the tighten strings of the guitar.

So, back to how vulnerable is the power grid? We will never know…when the time comes you will find out about it via that insane heat or extreme cold that you will be feeling.

Things that indicate the electric grid had gone down

  1. The insane heat in your house
  2. Your toilet bowl freeze up
  3. Your taps stops flowing from the national water treatment plants.
  4. Traffic lights gone
  5. Cell phone, iPod, iPhone, PSP and all electronics stops charging
  6. Internet connection disrupted
  7. Television no longer on standby but it’s off.
  8. Microwave Died.
  9. Total darkness not even street lamp, you can’t see your five fingers.
  10. Loud noise from neighbors screaming or shouting
  11. Police sirens or Ambulance sirens everywhere.

The above is just the beginning signals of a total blackout, if it’s permanent…you will get more symptoms such as chaos of lootings & mass crimes commited by ordinary folks just to surivive the crisis.

If there are no gun laws, the streets will become a war zone….if there are gun laws…the streets will be a knife zones.

The rest just watch movies such as “Die Hard 4.0″, “Mad Max 2 & 3″ and the book “The Road” to get the feel of what it will be like.

We are vulnerable regardless what you think but to me, everyday is a blessing and by knowing the end might be near….we will be better appreciative of every hour we are alive in this world…

Make your day the best day of your life and be prepared for any kinds of emergency that may occur in our life time.

God Bless.

Nearly 1m customers in dark after ice storm batters US Midwest

According to Straitstimes:

OKLAHOMA CITY – A MASSIVE storm that dropped sleet and freezing rain across the US’s midsection, causing at least 24 deaths and leaving nearly a million utility customers without electricity, finally tapered off, but another wintry blast was forecast to develop on Wednesday over the southern Plains.

The new system was expected to bring more sleet and freezing rain to Oklahoma, Missouri and Texas, but not nearly as much as the previous storm, according to the National Weather Service.

Ice ranging from a quarter-inch to 2.5 centimetres thick glazed roads in much of the central Plains and Midwest. At least 24 deaths have been blamed on the storm since it developed last weekend. Most resulted from traffic accidents.

Forecasters said more snow, sleet and freezing rain could develop across the northern Ohio Valley and from Pennsylvania into New England on Wednesday.

The power outage was the worst ever in Oklahoma, with more than 618,000 homes and businesses without electricity late Tuesday.

Officials said it could be a week to 10 days before power is fully restored

- One week without power will make anyone crazy, they might be having serious problems keeping food fresh and may run out of non-perishable food as well. This might be just their worst week of their lives!

I bet this event will make them more prone to renewable energies and the importance of being prepared. It won’t be long that another event to take place somewhere in the world of environmental disasters.

Take action now! Go renewable!

Vietnam: Power cuts hit nation as dry season starts

According to VietNamNet:

VietNamNet Bridge – State utilities firm Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) announced that it has no choice but to cut electricity supply as the dry season is coming in.

In a few coming days, power cuts will be carried out from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. every day until the end of the year.

Justifying the power cut, Mr. Dang Huy Cuong, Director of the National Load Dispatch Center (AO) of EVN pointed out that the whole country has had a shortage of electricity for several years now. Recently, the implications of this situation have worsened as a number of power stations, like the 1500-MW Phu My Power Plant which is halting its operation for repair, while a number of new supply sources of power, including standby ones are not ready for use.

Another example is the Ca Mau Plants No.1 and No. 2, with a total 1500MW capacity, which were supposed to begin their operation and commence generating power by 2007. These plants were an attempt to help the country overcome power shortages during the dry season, yet they both cannot start operating due to technical problems.

At present, the total daily demand of power over the dry season is put at 197million KWh, which requires an output of 11,200MW, yet the highest available output of the entire supply system is limited to 9,800MW per day.

With such a demand, hydroelectricity plants have little choice but to run at their full capacity to produce electricity for the whole nation’ electricity grid.

However, hydroelectricity is also running out due to the shortage of water in hydroelectric dams in the dry season.

An EVN spokesman added that in a next few days, the volume of power consumed is expected to climb up to 205 million KWh per day, so EVN has few options but to implement scheduled power cuts nationwide as a means to ensure the integrity and safety of the system’s operation.

EVN reported on a power shortage of 6.6 billion KWh this year and forecast that the whole country will face a power shortage of approximately 8.6 billion KWh in 2008 and up to 10.3 billion KWh in 2009.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, 25 medium and small-scale hydroelectricity projects are expected to be in operation by the end of this year. Currently only eight among them have started operation, generating a total volume of 94.6 MW of power. A number of foreign investment projects are still on a waiting list while other projects owned by local investors have been making slow progress.

Many power supply enterprises blamed EVN for the shortage of power, saying that its monopoly on the power industry makes many investors hesitate to build power plants for fear that if EVN do not buy their products, then there is no other market.

- Another report on Vietnam on power outage rotation, this will be disruptive to economy and the life of the Vietnam People. It’s time for them to go renewable as well and we do not need to wait for such events to happen to go renewable globally.

Time for action! Go Renewable!
